Chapter 2

The freshly cut grass smelled like heaven in her nostrils, dewy and comforting at the same time—but not dewy and comforting enough to let Charlotte St. Luca forget where she was, considering the scent didn’t hide everything else: the headstones, the names engraved in every one of them…the dead flowers and lack of footprints, indicating no one had visited this area in a long time.

To be fair, hardly anyone probably visited graveyards at this point, as every human had become fair play for slavery, and no one really kept count of the dead anymore. But the lack of visitors just made the graveyard seem more dead to her, and that alone sent a wisp of dread at the pit of her stomach. She ignored it.

She kept walking, keeping her footsteps light and unobtrusive. Wishing she were anywhere else but here, living a normal life in a world full of abnormalities.

Those musings didn’t have time to flourish, cut off immediately when she felt the two powerful presences behind her. They had robes on, just like she did, hiding their faces from anyone who might happen to pass by. But she knew what their expressions were, even without needing to look: eagerness, excitement that they wouldn’t be able contain.

A sordid kind of anticipation of what was to come.

She sealed the dread tight, her footsteps taking her backward—an initial instinct to run away. But she went nowhere fast as her soles hit an invisible barrier, indicating magic was already circling the air around them. Because she was still seventeen and unaccounted for, that magic would follow her, no matter where she went.

It would track her down and bring her back, and the consequences after trying to escape just wouldn’t be worth it.

“You’re moving too slow. Hurry the hell up and stop stalling on us.”

Emma St. Luca’s words were harsh, as they often were when it came to Charlotte. The dislike vibrated in the older woman's tone, and Charlotte dealt with it the only way she dealt with things like these: by nodding fast and following instructions with her head down. Her aunt had always disliked her: nothing new.

Certainly not scary enough to stop Charlotte’s sister from escaping the moment she'd hit twenty-one, when the magical barrier no longer chained her.

Beside Emma, a tsk-ing sound was heard.

“Now, now, there’s no need to rush,” Enton St. Luca admonished, voice deep and soothing. “We have all the time in the world, and this place is empty. Come, child, walk with me. I have things to show you.”

It was ironic how the reassuring words had the opposite effect on Charlotte: a sheer need to get away from her uncle and sidle closer to her aunt. It was almost laughable, but this was no laughing matter. As it was, she swallowed whatever protest was in her throat and nodded, still keeping her head down as she fell in step with him. Behind them, she could feel her aunt glaring daggers at her back, and the slight sizzle of energy made her want to shudder.
